Holiday makers having fun at The Western Saloon |
If you're a regular visitor to Benidorm for your holidays, then you must know that some songs you hear entertainer's play over and over again are sometimes classed as "Benidorm Songs". Yes, these annoying tunes may have been a hit in the past, but they are also played religiously by a number of performers in Benidorm. Why? Because you Brits love these songs and request them over and over.... again.
Now before I make (another) list, there is one thing you must know if you're not a regular Benidom-er. "Penny Arcade" by Roy Orbison, is the Benidorm anthem. Yes, I for one hate the song, and you probably do too (or not, whatever floats your boat), but it is 100% true. If you go to any karaoke bar, you I promise you, you DEFINITELY will hear somebody get up on the mic and sing that song. However, a close second for the Benidorm anthem is "Sweet Caroline" by Neil Diamond. And I hate that song as much, if not a little less, than 'Penny Arcade'.
Now for more 'Benidorm Songs':
1. The Proclaimers - 500 Miles
Are you Scottish and in Benidorm? Well then congratulations! This Benidorm song is classed as a Benidorm song due to the fact so many Scottish people request it. So now, every performer around plays this song for "anybody from Scotland?". Though, I also think that every performer in the UK plays this song for the Scottish. Well, everybody except Pablo Bloom.
2. Tom Jones - Delilah
Are you Welsh and in Benidorm? CONGRATS! Just like the Scottish, the Welsh were also able to request this song so much that it became annoying in this town. Well, "Ba Ba Black Sheep" didn't go down so well.
...What do you mean that's not Welsh?
3. The Killers - Human
Well, here we are again, back at this song. I do, however, love this song! More than the typical 4 chords most songs contain nowadays. Basically, this song is so epic, it was requested enough times for every entertainer in Benidorm to play. Even with an F#dim!
4. Smokie - Living Next Door to Alice
Alice? ALICE?! WHO THE heck is this Alice person you speak of?
Now I'm not too sure if others would class it as a Benidorm song, as the first time I heard it was last year (2013) when Rockaholics (John & Richie) played it. In between every song. I hear it everywhere now though!
5. The Monkees - I'm A Believer
I hear this song everywhere. End of.
6. R.E.M. - Loosing My Religion
I think you could class this as a Benidorm song, because although it's not absolutely everywhere, it's still everywhere. And by that I mean, I know a lot of people who play it. Including me :') (Plus I needed to think of a song to bumb up the list to 10).
7. The Mavericks - Dance The Night Away
With this song having a Spanish element in the style, alongside the word "señoritas", BAM! Benidorm Song. The fact that people love to dance to this song as well is also in the mix. Congratulations, Van Halen.
8. Richie Valens - La Bamba
Para bailar La Bamba doo be doo be da la la 'riba ey 'riba!
Everybody knows it and you know it. No explanation needed really.
9. PSY - Gangnam Style
... Yep.
10. Every Rock 'n' Roll song known to mankind
Yes, I am a lover of 50s/60s Rock 'n' Roll, but I never knew how many people play the same songs over and over and over and over and over....... again. That's not enough to stop me from playing those songs over and over again though. So I guess you can say I'm a 'proper Benidormer'?
Eh, no thanks.
Those are just a few that popped into my head.
*Considers putting 'Windmill in Old Amsterdam' in*
If you think I have missed out any song(s), let me know! I'll add them in, and give you credit :-)
Catch you later!
